Apple was in talks to acquire Intel’s smartphone modem business because the company was looking to manufacture its own modems for 2020 5G iPhone models. Apple has now completed the acquisition of Intel’s smartphone modem business.
We confirmed the news a couple of months ago. The acquisition was valued at $1 billion. It gives Intel the ability to continue the development of technology for 5G networks. Intel, however, retains the option to develop modems for non-smartphone applications such as laptops and PCs etc.
Apple will launch four new iPhones next year with 5G connectivity but the modems will be developed by Qualcomm.
