Google is facing massive outage on its cloud services. Mainly the east cost region of the United States is effected but some reports also suggest outage in Eastern Europe as well. While third party services like Snapchat, Shopify and Vimeo are effected, Apple’s iCloud services are also being affected by this major outage.
According to Apple, services like iMessages, Photos, iCloud Mail, iCloud Drive are facing issues and are running slowly than expected. The issue is not widespread and no Apple service is offline but users may expect slow loading issues.
Apple uses Google Cloud as well as Amazon’s S3 platform for its cloud services. Data such as contacts, messages, photos, videos and more is stored on these servers. Rest assure, these platforms cannot access user data.
Each file is broken into chunks and encrypted by iCloud using AES-128 and a key derived from each chunk’s contents that utilizes SHA-256. The keys and the file’s metadata are stored by Apple in the user’s iCloud account. The encrypted chunks of the file are stored, without any user-identifying information, using third-party storage services, such as S3 and Google Cloud Platform.
