Apple is reporting in the process of acquiring self-driving shuttle company drive.ai. The deal will boost Apple’s autonomous vehicle initiative with drive.ai’s engineers and experts.
Apple’s acquisitions in the past have been more for the talent and intellectual property rather than the brand value of any product. This acquisition in no different, it is more of a acqui-hire actually where Apple’s target are the expert and engineers behind drive.ai’s counter.
Drive.ai was founded in 2015 by the graduates of Stanford University’s artificial intelligence department. according to their website:
“Drive.ai uses artificial intelligence to create self-driving transportation solutions that improve the state of mobility today,”
Drive.ai raised $77 million from Nvidia and New Enterprise Associates but the funding didn’t go through to make the company independent.
Apple’s self driving initiative is somewhat an open secret in Silicon Valley and being carried out under the name of Project Titan. Apple started the project to produce branded vehicles but took a step back after it hit some snags. For now Apple’s is reportedly building a self driving sub system.
When will this deal go though, we are not sure but this deal will definitely add a large number of engineers and neural network specialists well versed in self driving vehicles.
